Why are we throwing so much away without any regard as to what we are doing to our environment?  Are we just selfish, stupid or couldn’t care a darn?  Why do we have so much rubbish?  Paying a little attention as to where this comes from I realised, that the majority is fancy packaging.  Bright colourful boxes, plastic bottles and glass jars opened, contents used, emptied and thrown away without a second thought.

Do we buy with our eyes? Is fancy colourful packaging the reason why we buy certain products?  Or do we buy the products that work best for us regardless of the packaging? Or do the manufacturers entice us into believing the prettier the packaging the better the quality and we can not help ourselves but buy their products?

Searched the good old internet for the local recycling angels, wrote an email and voila within half an hour this bed and breakfast is on their collection list for a ridiculously low amount of money!  Bought two bins nothing fancy or expensive and filled the bins within 2 days with recyclable materials.  Two days! Horror upon horrors, I shudder to think how much recyclable material I just simply threw away in my lifetime, shame on me!

For some reason, no idea why really, I’ve always thought recycling would be a pain in the left ear, one huge mission but I was wrong, completely wrong.  One measly bag of non-recyclable materials from the average of eight bags a week!

Also started a worm farm to recycle our food scraps, this venture is a little more involved but not at all unmanageable.  Collect the scraps the worms find palatable in a container, allow nature to take its course, keep their home moist and feed every second week.  A bucket underneath collects the water which is full of nutrition and given to my orchids and other plants.   Amazingly though is that this little eco system does not smell at all and found myself being a little concerned as to their wellbeing, crazy old woman that I am!

Now I just have to get over my squeamishness and buy that compost bin into which will go everything else worth composting.

It is our responsibility, we the Earthlings, we the parents and we the generation that created a world full of bright and colourful rubbish to change the way we think.  My most humble and sincere apology to the future generations that will once day have to deal with the rubbish I had left behind because I thought it would be a hassle, take up to much of my valuable time and was to selfish to take responsibility for my own junk.

But, thankfully I saw, I cringed and I conquered.
